About me and my work

The Camilla Cahlo Style

My own unique style is formally influenced by Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and Minimalism. Recurring features include organic forms and strong contrasts juxtaposed with delicate shading and playful lines.

Museum inspired tattoos

I express my enthusiasm for museums and art exhibitions in museum-inspired tattoo designs. I particularly admire the works of Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, Vincent van Gogh, Alphonse Mucha and Egon Schiele. They all had their very own style, which completely deviated from the prevailing art consensus and ushered in modern painting. Just like they painted in a revolutionary way, I strive for an alternative and new tattoo art.

Artistic approach

In my tattoo art I process philosophical, poetic and socially critical thoughts, often feminist origin. The constraints of conservative, deadlocked structures in a patriarchal society are visually questioned in my drawings.

The role of women is often the focus of my attention. Inspired by classical modern artists, I transform motifs from their works into tattoo designs and try to place them in new perspectives.

To achieve this, I rethink both traditional techniques and styles: Lines do not represent boundaries in the motif, but are part of an overall composition of motif and body. In my understanding, a motif is not a sticker that is stung 1 to 1 on skin. A tattoo is an individual work of art that is only created by me as a tattoo artist and its wearer - specifically tailored to the respective body flow, very personal. Tattoos are made by human hands and therefore unique products of our nature and culture at the same time.

About Camilla Cahlo

I was born in Germany in 1995 into a family of artists. After graduating from high school, I went to college for fine arts in Dresden to study theater painting.

Pursuing my interest in the content of art and culture, I went through a bachelor’s degree in museology and Italo-Romance studies. To it I then studied exhibition design for a master’s degree at the FH Joanneum in Graz. From analogue painting, I switched to digital illustration and drawing in autumn 2020 and soon found my passion in tattooing.

I live and work as a tattoo artist and small business owner (Atelier Mondschein) in Graz.
